Con Party Dusts Off Klan Hoods For Halloween!

One would think, early in the 21st century, that we have become a much more enlightened people. That what matters is the substance of the person and not the colour of their skin. If, however, you are part of John Sidney McCain's leadership team here in Virginia, and specifically his campaign chair in Buchanan County as well as being the Treasurer of the Buchanan County Republican Party, then you may not be aware that it is no longer the 19th Century and blacks are no longer counted as 3/5 of a person.

The person in question would be one Bobby Lee May. He wrote an editorial piece in a paper called The Voice. In it he outlines Senator Obama's 'positions' as he sees them. The jingoistic rant that follows leaves no doubt in my mind about what his bed sheets are used for.

Here's the Column by Bobby Lee May

To his credit, Sidney (did you know he's a closet Australian?), asked for and got Mr May's resignation. Couple of problems linger. Nearly $1 million in business sent to Mr May by the McCain campaign. Seems Mr May is in the business of making political paraphernalia such as signs and buttons and they're still being cranked out. McCain only does the right thing on the surface. He distances himself from an avowed bigot but sees no problem in continuing to do business with him. No different than publicly dismissing his economics guru while leaving attached to the campaign in an 'unofficial' way. You know - Phil Graham, author of the Commodities Modernization Act, that warmed us up with the greed and collapse of Enron before taking us down the road to rampant oil speculation and leading to the global credit crisis and finishing with either a deep and hard recession or possibly even a global depression.

1929 - Banking & Investment Deregulation = Overleveraged Speculation =Market Collapse = The Great Depression

2008 - Banking, Commodities & Investment Deregulation = Overleveraged Speculation = Market Collapse = ???

Of course he's not the only politician who is lining the pockets of this racist. Our dear friend Virgil Goode has done over $100k of business with this 'good ol' boy'. You remember Virgil - the congressman who believes that the 1st Amendment applies only if your Christian. Running his campaign based on racial and religious bigotry is only different from McCain's campaign and Palin's rhetoric for it's transparency.

Bush managed to hold onto power for 8 years through his judicious use of fear. In the closing month of the campaign - with his and the Con Parties economic policies shown to be completely bankrupt - fear, with a little bit of racial suspicion, are the only platforms he has left to run on.

Piet,

I understand you hate the Republicans, or Con Party, but when will you point out the ridiculousness of the politics that the other side is involved in as well?

That the whole problem with national politics. It's just filled with finger pointing at the opposite side. When will both sides wake up and realize we're in a big pile of poop and someone needs to come up with a bilateral way to solve some real problems?

God bless!

Chris - I don't hate Republicans. I have an extreme dislike for racists and bigots and those who support them directly or through inaction. Perhaps you are more tolerant of that particular viewpoint.

Piet,

Granted I commented on your blog, and I truly believe you have the right to write whatever you want.

What's weird though, is how defensive you are. You essentially called me a racist. Where do you get that from?

The piece was about a McCain operative who is a racist. While McCain repudiated him he is still doing business with him and is running a campaign that reeks of racial suspicion. When you say that a bilateral response is needed, when commenting on a post about racism, then one must assume their actions are 'OK' with you.

Silence = Complicity

As far as the crisis that we are in... Normally I would be all for coming up with a bipartisan solution. Couple of problems with that. You can draw a direct line from the policies and goals of the Republican party to what is unfolding today. Had they stuck to their stated goals of smaller government and less spending then I would think they should have a place at the table. Instead they went with excessive corporate greed lining the pockets of a few at the expense of the people and diverting billions of dollars into black holes instead of fixing our crumbling infrastructure or taking care of the future, our kids.

The bailout bill was the result of bipartisanship and it stinks.

Lastly, after running as a 'uniter, nor a divider' which turned out to mean 'your with us or against us' and calling people who dissent or ask for transparency 'traitors', I think they have given up their right to sit at the adult table in the next Congress. A little time in the wilderness may be good for their souls and allow them to return and live up to their beliefs rather than using the Federal Government as an ATM for corporate welfare.

The Republican party has been a fiscally conservative party for a long time, agreed.

However, spending on infrastructure and "our kids" wouldn't have averted this crisis, and there is no bit of credible data that says otherwise.

Honestly, I shouldn't have commented initially. You have an agenda, plain and simple. You seem to always circle around to point fingers at the evil, hate mongering, shadow government Republicans. If that's your solution to the problem, then have at it. You see racism many places and I don't. We disagree. That's cool.

Again, God bless! By the way, congrats on the coming addition to your family.

Perhaps I do see racism where you don't. Maybe you can answer this for me... Why are McCain and his surrogates running around saying barack HUSSEIN obama?

All those nuts seemed to scare McCain yesterday when he to remind his audience that Obama was an American and a good family man.

I never thought I'd see a dialogue between Yukon Cornealious (sp) and Bill the Cat.

Bobby Lee May is an idiot. His column was horrible and he deserves to be ridiculed for it.

But what you (and many others) fail to point out about the LA Times article that brought this to light is that the focus is not on May or Republicans but DEMOCRATS in SWVA who are having a hard time voting for Obama because of his race.

Racism is a bi-partisan issue. It's disgusting and intolerable, but is not unique to one side of the political spectrum. Having blinders on that don't let one see is on their own side does nothing to directly face and combat the issue.

I agree with Jason. Racism isn't only a bi-partisan issue, but a human issue. It's stupid, yet so much of what we as broken beings do is stupid. I guess that's a topic for another day, though.

Piet, thanks for your blog. I usually disagree with what you write, but really appreciate your viewpoint.

Rock on.
